The Orpington area has been a settlement for people since stone age times. Bronze age artefacts have also been found and even an Iron age Farmstead has been unearthed. The Romans and the Anglo Saxons also made an appearance, and the settlement is first documented in 1038. Orpington, still a small village, played host to Elizabeth I in 1573, and prior to the arrival of the railways the village was surrounded by hop fields, soft fruit farms and orchards. As the town grew, the abundance of hop and fruit picking work attracted many itinerant workers, including the Romani people. Annual camps provided accommodation of the workforce up to the late 20th Century.
